Amazon signs its first African reseller deal, beating Starlink
What happened
Amazon Leo (Kuiper) and South African ISP Herotel announced a partnership — South Africa's Communications Minister Solly Malatsi appeared at the announcement — under which Herotel will resell Amazon Leo satellite broadband under a new consumer/rural brand, "evry" (Nano/Pro terminal tiers, 100/300 Mbps), commercial launch targeted 2027. This is Amazon's first named commercial LEO distribution deal on the African continent. By structuring the deal so Herotel (not Amazon) holds the telecom licence, Amazon Leo sidesteps a licensing step Starlink is still waiting on to enter the same South African market.
Read-across for SES
Africa is named in priors as a China-vs-West battleground where "each BRI lock is permanent SES loss" — this is the inverse case, a Western LEO operator (not SES, not China) locking a national go-to-market ahead of any confirmed Chinese BRI win there. Confirms Amazon Leo is converting satellite-count milestones into actual commercial distribution faster than Starlink in at least one African market, sharpening the three-way LEO squeeze (Starlink/Kuiper/Chinese BRI) that SES's own MEO/GEO fleet sits outside of.
As the brief filed it
[AGE: 12h] Amazon Leo signed its first African commercial deal — South Africa's Herotel will resell Kuiper broadband as "evry" from 2027, beating Starlink (still awaiting SA licensing) to a market this desk tracks as a China-vs-West battleground.
