FCC grants SpaceX global authority for Starlink Mobile

What happened

The FCC granted SpaceX global Section 214 authority on September 17, letting it carry Starlink Mobile traffic between the U.S. and other countries as carrier of record. The grant covers facilities-based and resale authority. It does not itself authorize Starlink Mobile in any foreign market — SpaceX still needs local spectrum and telecom licenses country by country. SpaceX calls global roaming Starlink Mobile's key differentiator, alongside a KDDI-linked handset targeting far higher data density than today's service.

Read-across for SES

SpaceX now holds the U.S. paperwork to sell Starlink Mobile internationally, a building block toward the global D2D service it guides to commercial launch in 2028. Each market SpaceX clears widens its cross-subsidized pricing challenge to SES's GEO and sovereign-connectivity customers. It narrows the window for SES's own D2D bet, through Elveo and AST SpaceMobile, to reach the market first.

As the brief filed it

[AGE: 1d] The FCC granted SpaceX global Section 214 authority Sept 17, letting Starlink Mobile carry traffic across borders. It is a step toward the global D2D push pressuring SES's own connectivity bets.
