US, Denmark, Greenland sign deal enabling Golden Dome siting
What happened
Trump, Danish PM Mette Frederiksen and Greenland PM Jens-Frederik Nielsen signed a trilateral security deal at the UN General Assembly on 22 September, amending the 1951 US-Denmark defense treaty. The deal creates two new US defense areas — at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig — permits further bases by mutual agreement, and authorizes a Golden Dome missile-defense site as a shield against ballistic-missile threats. Frederiksen said no decision has been made on the system's specifics, and Copenhagen barred non-NATO militaries from Greenland without unanimous consent.
Read-across for SES
Golden Dome already concentrates US orbital-defense spending in SpaceX-built, proliferated-LEO architecture. A Greenland site extends that footprint onto NATO's northern flank and into Danish territory, the same sovereignty terrain SES sells against. It sharpens the dual argument SES makes to European governments: Washington's own missile-defense build now sits inside Europe, making an EU-controlled alternative like IRIS² more urgent, not less, even as the new bases deepen European dependence on American systems.
As the brief filed it
[AGE: ~14h] The US, Denmark and Greenland signed a security deal at the UN, authorizing new American bases and a Golden Dome missile-defense site in Greenland. It extends Golden Dome's SpaceX-built footprint into the Arctic and NATO's northern flank.
