Arabsat picks China to build its 50th satellite

What happened

Arabsat contracted China Great Wall Industry Corporation to build and launch ARABSAT-50, its first satellite sourced from China and the first Chinese-built craft supplied to the Middle East. The high-power Ku-band satellite, built on China's DFH-3E platform, will serve direct-to-home broadcasting at 26 degrees East. Arabsat unveiled the deal at its 50th-anniversary event in Tunisia, with launch planned on a Long March 3B from Xichang. Neither company disclosed a contract value or launch date.

Read-across for SES

China's first Middle East satellite sale is a template for the BRI Digital push SES already competes against in Africa and Asia. Arabsat is a long-standing Gulf operator, not a first-time buyer courted on price alone. That raises the ceiling on how far Chinese vendors can reach into markets SES treats as contestable. It sharpens the case for European sovereign alternatives like IRIS² in regions where price, not politics, still decides the vendor.

As the brief filed it

[AGE: 5h] Arabsat signed China's CGWIC to build and launch its 50th-anniversary satellite. It is the first Chinese-built spacecraft ordered by a Middle Eastern operator, a client-capture move in a market SES also serves.
