Four of seven Axelspace GRUS-3 satellites fail

What happened

Axelspace said Sept 29 that four of its seven GRUS-3 Earth-observation satellites, launched in July, have a power-amplifier fault in their high-speed downlink and cannot begin commercial service. The company's own risk committee called recovery infeasible. Three satellites continue normal operations. Revenue exposure includes Japan's Ministry of Defense, a customer of Axelspace's AxelGlobe imagery, though the scale of the loss is not yet disclosed. Axelspace is reviewing its manufacturing process for satellites still in development.

Read-across for SES

Axelspace's AxelGlobe fleet serves Japan's MoD under the same government-augmented sovereign-EO model SES is weighing for its own space-data ambitions. A near-60% fleet loss just months after launch is a concrete reliability data point against that model, evidence execution risk is real and not just a growth story. It strengthens the case for redundancy in any SES-backed EO or defense-data offering.

As the brief filed it

[AGE: <3h] Four of Japan's Axelspace's seven new GRUS-3 Earth-observation satellites have failed communications and cannot enter commercial service, a reliability hit to a government-linked sovereign-EO programme.
