SpaceX Seeks $40 Billion to Buy Nvidia AI Chips
What happened
SpaceX is seeking about $40 billion in financing, led by Apollo Global Management, to buy Nvidia chips for its AI unit, the Financial Times reported Oct. 6. Reuters and several other outlets corroborated the report the same day. The package splits into about $10 billion of bank loans and $30 billion of investment-grade bonds, with Pimco among the lenders in talks. SpaceX targets a 2027 close. Neither SpaceX nor Apollo has confirmed the terms.
Read-across for SES
SpaceX is again financing its AI buildout with debt rather than Starlink's own cash flow, the same cross-subsidy that funds its price war against SES. Completing this raise on investment-grade terms would also show SpaceX can still tap debt markets cheaply, cutting against any read that its capital access is tightening.
As the brief filed it
[AGE: 17h] SpaceX is seeking roughly $40bn in Apollo-led financing, mostly investment-grade debt, to buy Nvidia AI chips. External financing is funding its AI buildout, not Starlink's own profit.
